Tepoztlán Mexico is a smaller town/village set in a peaceful valley. It is about a two-hour bus ride south of Mexico City. After spending about 9 weeks in Mexico City, we were ready for a different kind of experience. It was exactly the type of experience we wanted!
General Thoughts:
One note for folks researching their first trip to the area. Tepoztlán is different than Tepotzotlán (which is northwest of Mexico City). This is especially important if you are looking up bus tickets.
Because of the plethora of spas as well as hiking opportunities, plenty of tourists come to Tepoztlán. As with any area that welcomes tourists, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants that make Mexican and international visitors feel right at home. It’s easy to find your way around the busiest area by orienting yourself to the two ‘main’ roads in the city: 5 de Mayo (which is initially Carr Cuernavaca-Tepoztlán at the bus stop) and Tepoztlán -Yautepec (which turns into Revolución de 1910).
And we definitely enjoyed strolling through the permanent market, as well as the pop-up market that appeared around the town square weekly.
Grab A Bite:
Pachamama Bistró y Delicatessen. Take the time to find this small place. It provides strong coffee drinks, a variety of flavorful perfectly presented dishes and a calming staff. The quiche, breakfast egg dishes and the apple strudel were some of our favorite food dishes, as well as any drink we tried. And pick up some local honey while you’re there!
It’s in a quiet location. Yet you are only a short walking distance from the 2 largest roads through the city, as well as the square, and markets. Two key notes: Do not go when you are in a hurry (perfection takes time), and realize this place is cash only.

Antojitos Maritere. The huaraches are flavorful and filling! We suggest the combo (combinado) of the longaniza (sausage) and the champinones (mushrooms). And bonus – the service is friendly and fast. This is an informal place with only 4 tables. You can get your order to-go.

Las Calaquitas Restaurante Mezcalería. Our gracious airbnb hostess took us to this restaurant during our first afternoon in the town. The food was delicious and service was great. And if you’re more late breakfast people? Check this place out for breakfast as well. It’s just a block off 5 de Mayo and provides a variety of great flavors.

CaseRony. For a different kind of experience, walk or take a taxi to this out-of-the-way, laid-back restaurant that serves fresh food and cold beers. And take home some bone broth, lasagna or perhaps some other goodies that they may have on-hand. If you are staying near Tepoztlán square, this is a looooong walk!
